RECORD NUMBER OF VOTES IN WEST SUSSEX YOUTH PARLIAMENT AND YOUTH CABINET ELECTIONS 13th July 2012

A record number of young people came out to vote in the 11th year of West Sussex’s Youth Cabinet and Youth Parliament elections.

39,163 votes were cast by just over twenty thousand young people aged 11 – 19, via a mixture of traditional ballot papers and online voting.

Two students from the Millais School – Harriett Trickett, 14, and Sara Dedman, 13 – were elected to the Youth Cabinet in Horsham East.

In Horsham West, Joshua Dunn and Bonizwe Macfadden – both 17 and from Collyer’s – triumphed in the elections.

The new members of the Youth Cabinet will be working alongside decision makers from County Hall, looking at issues that affect young people.

Councillor Peter Evans, West Sussex County Council Cabinet member for children, said: “The elections team are already looking to build on this success for next year’s elections, and encourage even more young people to use their voice and democratic right.”

A list of the other successful candidates and more information on the story can be found at The Resident Online.
