Youngsters £20k skate park project 29th May 2012

Members of Kidsgrove Youth Parliament are trying to raise funds to revamp the skate facilities at Birchenwood Country Park.

They are hoping to build a new skate bowl and ramp. The parliament, which has been meeting since October, is applying for grants from local charities in order to secure the funding needed for the development.

The skate park has been the subject of complaints about anti social behaviour from residents, who said the park was abused by crowds of up to 100 youths. The Youth Parliament is now working to change the perception of the area.

The 24 members of the Youth Parliament believe the new facilities will help to keep young people from the area off the streets, as well as catering to more experienced skaters.

Kidsgrove Mayor Kyle Robinson said: “They wanted to improve the area and bring it up to a better standard, and they have the full support of the council.”
