The UK Youth Parliament’s first intergenerational event saw over 250 young people, older people, MPs and business leaders coming together to promote a greater understanding across the generations. The prestigious British Museum played host to the event where the following six key topics were vigourously debated;
1. Sex & relationships education in schools 2. Votes at 16 3. Public transport for young people 4. More facilities for young people 5. Climate change 6. Child poverty
Andy Hamflett, Chief Executive of the UK Youth Parliament commented,
“It’s extremely important that young people from all communities, right across the UK, are able to meet with and make suggestions to adults of influence. The young people involved all represented their regions brilliantly and should be proud of their achievements.”
Nat Peters, Member of UK Youth Parliament for West Midlands said,
"This day has been one of the most worthwhile experiences in my time as a Member of the UK Youth Parliament. I have learnt and gained so much today with different debates and experiences. It has been amazing being in the presence of leading political figures such as the Minister for Justice Bridget Prentice."
Abdool Alli (77 years-old), Haringey Forum for Older People and Age Concern said,
"It was good working with so many young people today. Young and old need to work together more to participate in decision making."
A report from the event will be available from this webpage later in the year. For more information about this event please contact Kate Parish on 01252 844241 or kate.parish@ukyouthparliament.org.uk
