Free recycling in all schools
What would be the ultimate goal of this campaign?
We believe that recycling should be free and compulsory for all schools.
There is an urgency to act now for the future of this planet as it is young people who will inherit a damaged planet as a result of today’s actions.
There are financial implications for charging to facilitate recycling, which means straining school resources and often deterring schools from recycling at all. Depending on their size, schools can currently spend between £300 and £1000 per year on waste disposal. Through reducing, reusing and recycling, schools can cut waste production by more than 50%, saving money on disposal costs.
DEFRA has clarified that waste from schools is classified under the Controlled Waste Regulations 1992 as household waste for which a charge for collection can be made. We believe that it is unfair to charge schools to collect or dispose of their waste that can be recycled, and would like to see local authorities help schools to become beacons of recycling and waste minimisation for their communities.
We believe that recycling in schools is something Local Authorities need to prioritise as a necessary cost and work in partnership with schools to provide free recycling facilities and collections.
We recognise that schools also need to imbed a culture of environmental practice and see as their duty to promote and encourage sustainable action for the betterment of our environment.
