Name: Amanda
Hewitt
Status:
Deputy MYP
Constituency:
Sefton
--------------------------------------------------------
Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
I am most enthusiastic towards the
idea of young people having a voice and also changing the portrayal
of young people in the media as I feel currently we are seen as
yobs and vandals. I have strong belief in the fact that young people
have new ideas and valid opinions and these should be listened to.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
There is a total lack of places to
go in Sefton, leaving teenagers with nothing better to do than hang
around on the streets and drink. Also there are a lot of 'snotty'
looks thrown in the direction of teenagers from the older members
of the community. I feel there should be places were we could meet
and socialise, reserved for young people. I know drinking cannot
be stopped entirely but at least this way it would be a safer area.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
The other Sefton representatives and
I have already been looking into organising a fundraising day in
the summer to get ourselves known and collect any concerns from
local young people. Live bands and performers will play and there
will also be a magician and a climbing wall; the money will go to
the Mayor's Appeal. Another day we have arranged is an 'Own Clothes
Day' within all the schools in Sefton. Children will bring in a
packet of pasta in exchange for the right to wear their own clothes
and the pasta will be sent to countries in need - due to it's long
expiry date.
We will also organise surgeries in local youth clubs where young
people will be able to tell us their concerns and then we will try
and take some action.
The final thing we have planned so far is to collect and video young
people's opinions about what would make Sefton a better place to
live and then send this video off to the government and other people
it may concern.
What is your future career ambition?
If I'd been asked this question about
a week ago, I'd say a primary school teacher, however now I'm not
so sure as I realise this would just be the 'safe' option. Now,
I am thinking about going to university to study either: marketing
and advertising, some sort of art or psychology. This will all depend
on how I feel about the A-Level subjects I will be taking in September
and GCSE results though.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
I'd have to say Martin Luther King
because I think the work he did for equality was amazing. He dedicated
his life to get black people rights and was cruelly shot. He was
also a great public speaker, which is one of the things I strive
to do well.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
Listen to young people's opinions
and views and keep them updated on political issues, as these are
the leaders and voters of tomorrow.
Additional comments:
I'd just like to say how much fun
I had on the North West residential in Anglesey and I can't wait
until Annual Sitting in Leicester.
