Name: Stephanie
Shaw
Status:
Deputy MYP
Constituency:
Cheshire
--------------------------------------------------------
Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
Making sex and relationship education
better and compulsory for all young people is the political issue
that I am most passionate about. Teenage pregnancy rates are ridiculously
high throughout the UK and this can be stopped or reduced through
simply educating us!
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
Teen pregnancy, seeing as Crewe (an
area within Mid Cheshire) has got the highest teen pregnancy rates
in the UK.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
I really want to change the government's
opinions on what parts of sex and relationship education should
be compulsory and the format in which it is given to us young people.
At the moment schools, 6th forms and colleges are meeting the government's
requirements through teaching biology (basically the stuff that
you need to pass your GCSEs). Just "advising" them to
educate about STIs, forms of contraception, etc is not good enough
since if they can get out of this "embarrassing" process
of teaching, they, in most cases will. Plus if teachers find it
embarrassing to teach this stuff, why not get a nurse or youth worker
in to do it. From research that we have done, most young people
would much prefer someone else other than their teachers to teach
them about sex and relationships. It's just as uncomfortable for
us if we've got an ancient blushing teacher talking to us about
the "physical act of love"!
What is your future career ambition?
I'm not completely sure of exactly
what I want to do yet. I'm just sure I want to make a difference.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
I haven't really got a main public
figure that I admire. The people I admire are closer to home.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
Take notice of what other countries
are doing in relation to making sex and relationship education compulsory
and given at a younger age, then compare their STI and teen pregnancy
rates to ours
notice anything?
Additional comments:
Just keep smiling and we'll get there
in the end!
