Name: Christopher
Hamps
Status:
Deputy MYP
Constituency:
Telford & Wrekin
--------------------------------------------------------
Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
I think I am most passionate about
issues to do with university top up fees introduced by the government.
I am also interested in 'green' issues including recycling and global
warming.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
People in Telford need to get involved.
There are a lot of places for them to go but I'm not sure these
are publicised enough, so I think it is important to advertise these
youth opportunities.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
Working together with the Telford
and Wrekin MYP Andrew Wilkins, we have started a campaign to introduce
recycling in every school in the borough of Telford and Wrekin.
What is your future career ambition?
I would like to become a dentist;
I know what you're all thinking, why? I think it's an exciting job
not involving too much paper work. My other career prospect is possibly
becoming a lawyer, which I guess is at the other end of the spectrum!
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
I'm not sure. I think I admire Nelson
Mandela. He was imprisoned for speaking out of turn about the white
government of South Africa, yet when he was eventually released
he still fought for an end to apartheid. It takes a lot of courage
to stand up for what is right even when a majority don't agree.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
Young people are the not only the
adults of tomorrow but the people of today. The government should
being doing more to help young people who live in poverty. In Telford
and Wrekin many young people live in rural areas and there is not
always adequate transport for them to socialise and use facilities
and services which are usually based in towns.
