Name: Scott Mackay
Status: MYP
Constituency:Scotland
--------------------------------------------------------
Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
My main political issue will always be about sports. I believe that ALL young people are entitled to accessible and affordable facilities and try any sport they want, especially when the Government tell us to have a healthy and active life style.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
I live in Paisley just outside Glasgow and I feel the main issues for young people is transport to be more affordable and more efficient, safer streets, better links with police and fire services. Also child poverty and sectarianism is becoming a growing issue.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
I want to promote UKYP in Scotland more, have joint surgeries with various Scottish MPs and get young people involved in the issues that matter to them at a UK level and get decision makers to listen to us for a change.
What is your future career ambition?
I enjoyed being at the European Parliament in Brussels when I visited it in March so maybe something in there. I’m currently studying international business at university so hopefully it will help me head in that direction.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
I have two actually for different reasons. The first is Al Gore which is quite random for me but what he has done with “An Inconvenient Truth” is such an eye opener and bringing the issue of climate change and global warming to such a talking point is such an achievement. Also Lord Seb Coe is another with what he has done to bring the Olympics to London- shame about the logo though! Hopefully Glasgow will get the commonwealth games in 2014.
If there was one message you could
send to the Government, what would it be?
Young people are not just the future, they are the present! We need to be heard as well as there are many issues that affect us in our everyday lives. Here’s a phrase to remember: tell us and we’ll forget, show us and we may remember, involve us and we’ll understand! That’s what needs to happen in UK politics today.
Additional comments:
UKYP is such an opportunity for all MYPs to get their voice heard and influence decision makers by working together. Look forward to seeing you all at the annual sitting and in other events. Also can I encourage MYPs to support Glasgow’s bid for the commonwealth games in 2014 by signing up at www.glasgow2014.com Thanks!
