Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
The main issue which I think is important is education, (education, education, education, after all!) especially SRE in schools and ensuring a proper policy is set out for all young people regardless of their school or area.
I also believe making 16 and 17 year olds in full time education or training pay adult fares on buses and trains is ridiculous. ALL under 18s should be entitled to free transport.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
Nationally, I think the lack of training schemes and apprenticeships available is a huge problem in Scotland. There are thousands of young people with the enthusiasm and commitment who miss out on apprenticeships every year. The Government say they want to encourage the ‘NEET’ group into education or employment, but young people need to be given the opportunities.
On a more local level within my constituency of Glasgow Cathcart there is a real shortage of youth facilities. It’s difficult for many young people to access the facilities already there because of territorial issues and lack of transport. It’s important that this is recognised on both local and national levels so that young people can have more of a say in what is made available for them.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
In my term of office I’d like to see our regional campaign of an equal minimum wage for all have an effect on Government policy as well as engaging more young people locally with UKYP through the youth forum we are setting up.
What is your future career ambition?
I’d like a job where I could travel and ideally spend a gap year in Malawi through it. Other than that I guess I’ll just have to wait and see what I get next year with my Highers!
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
Make Poverty History.
Promises need to be kept, especially when people’s lives are at risk. It’s important that as well as cancelling the debt of developing countries and supplying aid we give more support to those at home living in poverty. 2005 was the year of demands. 2007 must be our year of action
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
Tommy Sheridan - whatever you think of his politics the guy’s got guts and that deserves some serious credit.
