Name: Axel Landin

Status: Deputy MYP

Constituency:
Camden

--------------------------------------------------------

Which political issues are you most passionate about?

Integration of immigrants into British society is key. On top of this, I take a keen interest in international relations and foreign affairs. Equality is also very important for me: as an ardent Socialist I advocate more social housing to keep people off the streets, and a single tier state education system for everybody, as well as generous human rights: a surveillance state is not the answer.

What do you feel is the biggest issue for young people in your constituency?

In Camden we have a lot of crime, and the highest concentration of homeless young people in Europe. There is in places a gang culture, which can frequently be intimidating and dangerous.

What do you hope to achieve during your term of office?

In terms of national politics, I’m championing maximum representation of the young people of Camden: we need to get our voices heard on every key issue that the government discusses. They’re planning out our futures by legislation, and we all need to stand up and be counted. I will not lurk in the shadows, being active in the community and keeping Camden’s young people posted on the workings of government. I’ll also play a very pro-active role within UKYP.

On a local level, I want to make a positive impact on the facilities in Camden. If our young people think that something’s missing, you can count on it that I’ll be lobbying for it!

What is your future career ambition?

I aim to pursue a career in politics at a national level. I’m strong minded and opinionated, and I have a passion for justice. I’m an extremely keen debater, and enjoy speaking to large groups of people and so I think this would be an ideal occupation for me.

Which public figure do you most admire and why?

There are too many. Nelson Mandela certainly springs to mind; his endurance, determination and dedication to civil rights are second to none. Another would perhaps be Nye Bevan, Labour’s Health Secretary of the 1940s who founded the National Health Service: a true supporter of people and society.

If there was one message you could send to the government, what would it be?

British people are growing increasingly disillusioned with government, as shown by the rapid decline in election turnouts in recent years. Young people are not an exception to this. Don’t lose the faith of a generation: listen to us, and work with us, for it is our futures that are in the making.

Additional comments:

Thank you for electing me as your Deputy MYP. My victory is a victory for Camden, and it’s a victory for progress. I’m outspoken and forthright, and I’ll stand up and say what needs to be said. Together we can make Camden, and our country, better for young people.
