Which political issues are you most passionate about?

I am really interested in human rights. I really value the work of charities like Liberty and Amnesty International and find it quite strange the amount of trouble that arose from the Human Rights Act 1998. I really do believe in every individual receiving rights simply because they are human and not because they are good or bad people. Sometimes we may have to limit their freedoms, but I believe it is right that we have no right to deny somebody of their basic human dignity, e.g. eternal incarceration without trial, i.e. Guantanamo Bay.

What do you feel is the biggest issue for young people in your constituency?

Crime is definitely a major issue for my young people. The recent spates of knife and gun crime have not helped the lives of many young black teenagers in my area and I really do feel they deserve more support than they are given. They are constantly referred to as the problem, rather than people using their skills and knowledge to aid in the solution. Another major problem, I feel is the lack of good role-models, for particularly, young black boys, who in Newham tend to grow up without fathers.

What do you hope to achieve during your term of office?

I aim to raise the profile of UKYP within the young people of my constituency and I want people to feel listened to. This doesn’t mean just hearing what they are saying, but being active and using that to promote positive change in their areas. I believe I am here as somebody to represent them, so I want the young people to use me to do that for them.

What is your future career ambition?

I definitely want to go to university to study law and become barrister. I love arguing and representing people and I believe this would be one of the best ways to use my arrogance in a positive manner.

Which public figure do you most admire and why?

A living public figure who I admire today would have to be Nelson Mandela. This is because his legacy and example still exists today and I believe many of us can learn from it. He was an example of how anyone could achieve what they wanted with determination and will; it is all about self belief and definitely really wanting something. He faced so much to fight for what he believed in and set an example to the rest of the world.

If there was one message you could send to the government, what would it be?

Stop listening to young people some of the time and listen to us all of the time. We know our lives the best and you should utilise that. Also, tell us who our commissioner is and make him accountable to those he works for, YOUNG PEOPLE.
