1. Which political issues are you most passionate about?
- Foreign Affairs and the European Union, especially the European Constitution and the ways it might erode our national sovereignty.
- The constitution and how our system of Government works including how reforming the House of Lords might damage our constitutional system.
- The lack of representation for young people in local politics.
2. What do you feel is the biggest issue for young people in your constituency?
First and foremost I think young people in Newcastle don’t have enough to do and that there is a lack in the provision of services for young people especially in the form of youth clubs, etc. I also think that young people in my constituency are underrepresented due to the lack of a youth council or any other form of permanent consultation forum for young people.
3. What do you hope to achieve during your term of office?
I hope to work with officials in the council and other young people to set up a youth council for our city; we desperately need one if young people aren’t going to be ignored. I also want to put more pressure on the council to do its bit in the efforts to kerb the effects of global warming and raise issues around the environment and global warming with young people.
4. What is your future career ambition?
After I’ve left school I’m hoping to go on to university and study law so I can become a barrister specialising in either criminal or international law. After I’ve practised law for a few years I hope to get in to national politics and make some sort of an impact on that front.
5. Which public figure do you admire and why?
Margaret Thatcher is the public figure I most admire because I think she changed British politics more than any of her predecessors or successors. She had a clear vision about how she wanted to change Britain and she went ahead in doing it with determination and a lot of guts. I think she changed Britain for the better and that we wouldn’t be as much of a successful country that we are today if it hadn’t been for her.
6. If there was one message you could send to government, what would it be?
Government ministers always talk about trusting the British people, so if they do why don’t they listen to them? My message to the Government would be to remember who gave them their mandate to govern, remember the promises and pledges they’ve made and put their so called ‘trust’ in the British people in to action by listening to them and giving them more of a voice because they are the people who feel the affects of the decisions Government makes.
