Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
I am most passionate about the issue around sex education in schools, and more awareness around issues such as sexually transmitted infections, and teenage pregnancies - the real stuff. Some young girls believe that if they have a baby, the council will give them benefits and a flat to live in, and they think this will be easy. However, it is not and I think this is an issue that needs to be tackled.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
I think that the biggest issue is facilities for young people. In my local town where I live, we have a sports centre, youth club and a skate park available to us. This is good for week days as they are always open on weekdays, which gives young people somewhere to go. Unfortunately, such facilities are not available to young people at the weekends. We need more areas to ‘hang out’ at the weekends. As a result the number of ASBOs in our area has gone up, even though people think it’s ‘sick’ to have an ASBO.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
I hope that as a country we can actually make a difference with a huge campaign. I want this campaign to be very successful. Also I am going to be standing for a procedures group representative in November, and hope that I am voted in.
What is your future career ambition?
My ambition for the future is to become a lawyer. I am a very confident young person, and I can be very argumentative. I believe that I have very good debating skills, and I love to challenge any other person who would like to have a debate with me. I also believe that a lot of justice is not brought to many families who have lost loved ones through crime. I love the satisfaction of knowing I’ve helped someone. I also believe that there are a lot of people who are innocent, but the jury find them to be guilty. I would love to become a lawyer and Youth Parliament has helped me a lot over the years.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
I admire Bob Dylan a lot. He puts political issues into his songs, and writes beautiful poetry. He writes about all sorts of issues including war and slavery. I think that he is an idol which many, many people admire. He may not be the best of singers but his poetry and song writing is outstanding.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
Listen to young people more, and sort out the NHS as it is in a right state, and make sex and relationships education in all schools compulsory.
Additional comments:
I have been part of the UKYP for nearly 5 years now, and it has helped me in so many ways. This is my last term in office and I want to go out with a bang. I think that I have made a difference to young people in my area. I have enjoyed this experience so much, and I hope any other people who join in the near future gain the same experience that I have. SEE YOU AT THE NATIONAL SITTING WOOP WOOP!
