Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
I believe that the right to hold politicians accountable should be extended to 16-17 year olds. If we claim to be a healthy democracy, we should give young people who are deemed responsible in so many other ways the right to vote. I also feel passionately that public transport needs to improve to get people out of cards and improve the environment, and that sex & relationships education should be compulsory.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
In my area, I believe that young people need more to do, better public transport and better drug & alcohol education. In East Sussex, it is a nightmare for young people to travel from rural areas. The lack of state of the art youth provision means many young people will hang around on the streets with nothing to do. Drug & alcohol education is also an issue, with no real provision offered in colleges at present.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
I would like to get young people heard by lowering the voting age to 16. I'd also like to see young people getting a descent sex education, by getting the government to introduce a compulsory standard of SRE.
What is your future career ambition?
I want to work in the city as an Economist! I'd like to do some work for a charity first though and will always make sure I perform some voluntary duties. UKYP has really taught me the importance of playing an active role in your community!
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
Bill Gates! I think it's amazing how someone can have the drive to go from having absolutely nothing to creating the wealth that he has. He is also a great example of a responsible entrepreneur, giving large sums of his money to charity and helping those who are less well off.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
Young people have a right to be heard on the issues that affect them such as school leavers age, public transport provisions, protection in part-time work and so on. These issues affect young people the most and it's only right that 16-17 year holds should be able to hold politicians to account with the right to vote at 16.
