Name: Tom Van Heeke
Status: MYP
Constituency: West Sussex
--------------------------------------------------------
Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
Improving public transport, securing 16 year olds the right to vote and international relations. For example, tackling terrorism and addressing our ignorance of other nation's and religion's traditions and cultures. If we all took the time to learn about and understand each other we wouldn't be spending so much time killing each other.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
Definitely transport! West Sussex is largely rural and without a car it is almost impossible and unaffordable to get around. Services are unreliable, inconvenient and very expensive.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
Serve my constituents well and feel that I have achieved something - even if it is small - to improve the lives of young people in West Sussex and the UK. I would definitely like to see a final push toward gaining votes at 16. Once young people have the vote all our other aims become much easier to achieve.
What is your future career ambition?
I'd like to become a lawyer or a diplomat but eventually go into politics.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
Senator Barack Obama (presidential candidate) in the United States. He symbolises and personifies everything America can be when it puts its mind to it - a place where racial stereotypes don't fit and no matter what your background or your heritage, if you work hard and play by the rules you can be anything you want to be.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
Stop fighting amongst yourselves and picking petty fights. Install some new leadership, get over yourselves and start running the country and make it better.
