Name: Alexander Hygate
Status: MYP
Constituency: Isles of Scilly
--------------------------------------------------------
Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
I think that the NHS needs to be kept functioning and free for future generations; I also think we need to stop NHS cuts, save NHS dentistry and bring back NHS optometry. I would like to see other public services preserved. In my view the private finance initiative is not economically viable or the best way to provide accountable public services.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
I think that the biggest problem for the young people in my constituency is a combination of a lack of things to do, as there aren’t many of the facilities that are taken for granted on the mainland (like cinema) and isolation as travel between Scilly and the mainland is extremely expensive.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
I hope to get more facilities and activities for young people on the islands. I also hope to give young people on the islands more of a voice.
What is your future career ambition?
I don’t really have a career ambition at the moment but after I finish school I want to go on to college and university.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
I admire Jamie Oliver for his campaign to make school dinners healthy and the charity he runs – fifteen – to give disadvantaged young people the chance to become chefs and gain full time employment in his restaurants.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
I think the young people of today would like to look forward to the same public services that have been available to the last generation, and now seem to be disappearing (for example the NHS).
