Name: Marie Findlay
Position: MYP
Constituency: Mendip/Sedgemoor

Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
The political issue that I am most passionate about is discrimination. At some point in our lives, I think that every one of us is discriminated against. Be it for our age, gender, race, nationality, sexuality or any other trait that makes us individual and unique. And if we are all affected by it, what sense does it make that we continue to allow it and, in some cases, perpetuate it? This is wrong and must stop.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
I feel that, as Mendip and Sedgemoor is a largely rural constituency, one of the biggest issues for my young people here is transport. Getting around independently can be hugely problematic (and very expensive) for many young people in my area, who have just as much right to do so as adults and young people in more urban areas.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
During my term of office, I hope to work with local MPs and councillors on my manifesto issues (educational pressure, transport, opportunities for all and public image of young people) as well as working with other D/MYPs on regional and national manifesto and campaign issues. I really hope to make a difference in the issues that are put forward by myself and others, and to represent the young people in my area.
What is your future career ambition?
I love languages at school and in the future I would love to work in the European Union, hopefully abroad.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
The public figure that I admire most would have to be Nelson Mandela. He has shown such incredible and inspiring determination during his lifetime, fighting to achieve everything that he believes in, no matter the cost. He sacrificed three decades of his youth (spent behind bars) for his people, which showed not only his passion, but his patience too. These are all the qualities that I aspire to have, and if I could display them to a fraction of the extent that Nelson Mandela has, I’d be very happy!
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
If I could send one message to the Government, it would have to be that young people have tons of great ideas to share with the country, which should be listened to and respected by adults. I know it’s a cliché, but we are the future!
