27.08.08

Four MYPs have traveled to the United States for the Democratic and Republican Conventions.James Greenhalgh and Fatima Kanji will be representing the UK at the Democratic Convention while Ben Mallon and Errum Mumtaz will attend the Republican Convention.

The MYPs were selected by the UK Youth Parliament to go on the three week tour which is sponsored by the US Embassy in London.

James Greenhalgh, Member of Youth Parliament for Staffordshire commented,

"This is an incredible opportunity the US Embassy has offered us - we will be experiencing first-hand the core aspects of a US political party's national convention.

“This is a fascinating time in the political history of the United States, as potentially we may be witnessing America's first black president preparing for the White House."

A spokesman for the US Embassy in London said: "The Embassy is really pleased to sponsor these outstanding young Members of the UK Youth Parliament on their trip to the Democratic National Convention.

"This trip gives America the chance to showcase our political process in action - a process that has its roots in British democracy and common law”.

The trip involves work experience at the conventions then a visit to Washington DC where they will be touring the White House and the Capitol Building. Finally the tour will end in New York where they hope to meet representatives of the city’s mayor, Michael Bloomberg.
