Young people make history in Commons chamber

02.11.2009

Over 300 Members of the UK Youth Parliament made history on Friday when they took over the House of Commons chamber. It was the first time MPs have allowed non MPs to debate in their chamber. The historic move saw elected 11-18 year-olds from across the country debate issues of concern to young people.

Steph Wills, Member of Youth Parliament, 17 years-old, commented,

“Having Members of Youth Parliament in the House of Commons is going to make a huge difference to the lives of young people all over the country because it proves to both adults and young people that we are being taken seriously and that a huge change is going to happen.”

The five issues being debated are -

- Youth crime and how to tackle it
- Public transport for young people
- Jobs for young people and the economy
- Lowering the voting age to 16
- University fees
