UK Youth Parliament appoints former Education Minister as Trustee

08.10.2009

Parmjit Dhanda, MP for Gloucester and a former Education Minister, has been appointed to the UK Youth Parliament Board of Trustees today.

Dhanda had responsibility for children, young people and families whilst at the Department for Education and Skills. As Minister he embarked upon a national tour with the National Youth Agency and helped to oversee the Youth Opportunity Fund and the Youth Capital Fund.

Dhanda commented,

“I am delighted to have been asked to take on this role with the UK Youth Parliament.  Young people often get an undeserved bad press.  I hope I’ll be able to help the UK Youth Parliament get across the positive role many young people play in our society.”

Andy Hamflett, Chief Executive of the UK Youth Parliament said,

“We are absolutely thrilled that Parmjit will be joining us on the Board, as he has consistently shown a strong interest in key areas of work  which are close to the UK Youth Parliament’s heart. In particular, his strong ideas on what Parliament needs to do to connect with the public, and his great interest in those groups who may need more help to allow them to engage, will be major assets as the organisation looks to move ahead.”

The UK Youth Parliament has a 21 strong Board of Trustees. Over half the positions on the Board are reserved for young people aged 18-25. Each of the main political parties is represented by a Member of Parliament.
