UKYP to meet in the House of Commons chamber

17.03.09

Just after 9pm last night – and following over two hours of robust debate – Members of Parliament voted by an overwhelming majority to allow Members of Youth Parliament to sit and debate in the House of Commons chamber this year.

For the past two weeks, the UK Youth Parliament’s proposed use of the House of Commons chamber has been rising up the agenda in the House of Commons, as it has been formally proposed (and opposed) on a number of occasions.

After lots of to-ing and fro-ing, an hour-long debate took place in the House of Commons on Thursday 12th March (you can view a short clip of the debate in the video above).

The debate ended inconclusively and was rescheduled for Monday 16th March. After another heated debate, the motion was passed by a majority of 186 votes.

Andy hamflett, UKYP Chief Executive, said,

"Many young people were watching the debate live and there has been a flurry of excitement at the result and the opportunity it now provides. We very much look forward to working with Parliament to scope out the details of the event, and will keep you up to date as we progress."
