Which political issues are you most passionate about?

I am really passionate about tackling climate change. I think it’s fantastic that awareness of the issue is being raised, and more people are hearing about this huge problem – but what are we actually doing about it? In the next 5-10 years, unless we have a serious revolution in the way every single one of us live and work, then we will have set our planet on a one way route to dangerous climate change. Are we really that selfish that we are just going to leave future generations to deal with the consequences of our inaction? If so, there are serious moral issues we need to address as well. There are so many ways in which we can act to reduce climate change within everything we do, school, work, travel, leisure... the government just need to take a lead and tell us how we are going to do it!

What do you feel is the biggest issue for young people in your constituency?

I believe that working towards breaking down stereotypical images of cultural and social groups in order to dispel prejudice is very important, especially as Peterborough is infamous for the tension between various groups. Bringing about cohesion, through increasing understanding, among the youth in my constituency would bring our city a long way towards ‘solving’ other issues that affect young people, e.g. bullying, drug/alcohol abuse, and the derogatory judgement that some adults hold about us as teenagers.

What do you hope to achieve during your term of office?

I want to make Peterborough a better place for ALL young people to live, regardless of colour, ethnicity, religion, sexuality and what school you go to.  I can do this by raising awareness of the many areas where teenagers are actively engaged in tackling issues and making Peterborough a better place. We’re all young people; we should be working for each other, not against each other.

What is your future career ambition?

I would really like to go into medicine to make a living of what I enjoy most: helping people in practical ways which can change their lives. I am also very interested in law (I like winning arguments!) so I am still leaving my options open.

Which public figure do you most admire and why?

I admire the Queen. She is absolutely fantastic, especially when one considers her age (nearly 82!) and everything that she continues to do. She stood strong during the period when the Royal Family was receiving huge amounts of criticism. Over the years she has persevered as our hard-working monarch, despite the decreasingly royalist nature of our country. I doubt anyone could find a better individual example of a service ethic in public life anywhere.

If there was one message you could send to the government, what would it be?

Young people are the future, and if you don’t start setting a good example – showing honesty, integrity and decisiveness about issues that really matter (like Climate Change) – then who knows what the country will turn out like when we have control?

Additional comments:

I’m so excited about this year and what I’m going to be able to do with the help of my fantastic deputies, the Peterborough Youth Council and the City Council.
