Name: Thashmim Miah

Position: Deputy MYP

Constituency:
Redbridge

Which political issues are you most passionate about?

I’d have to say the largely apathetic attitude to current affairs and the world around us. We are the future generation, yet many of us probably couldn’t tell you which party is now leading government!  I strongly believe that everyone should be aware of politics and the actions of their government, in order for them to get the most out of the society they live in and have a greater understanding of policies that affect their everyday lives.

What do you feel is the biggest issue for young people in your constituency?

In Redbridge, there is much dissatisfaction over the lack of work experience and volunteering opportunities. Many young people, and especially those applying to universities or looking to get into full-time work, are finding it more and more difficult to find any training or employment purely because of their lack of work skills, training or experience. If our society is to get anywhere, we need to give help to those who need it the most – to those who will lead our society in just a few short years.

What do you hope to achieve during your term of office?

I want to make a greater impact on current campaigns being run by UKYP and help kick-start the political knowledge project. Maybe I won’t be able to complete this particular endeavour, but baby steps are the way to get anywhere.

What is your future career ambition?

Too early to say – I’m only young!

Which public figure do you most admire and why?

This is a difficult decision, but I’d have to go with John Travolta. Apart from being an amazing actor and singer, he is a shining example to other members of celebdom out there. After the Haiti Earthquake of 2010, he piloted his own private jet to the disaster-wrecked country with rations and medical supplies to offer help immediately.  Actions like these make you appreciate the need to do the best with what you have – not all of us have Boeing 707s at our disposal, but when you do have the means to make a difference, be it your voice, your actions or your plane (!), it’s important to use everything you’ve been given.

If there was one message you could send to the government, what would it be?

You’ve been given the privilege to sort this country out, don’t take advantage of that.
