Name: Kishan Parshotam
Position: MYP
Constituency: Brent
--------------------------------------------------------
Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
I am extremely passionate about improving education and youth facilities. The government does not seem to be getting the correct formula for a successful and effective education system. By addressing this issue, the gap between socio-economic classes and groups will diminish. This will enhance unity amongst the population.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
There is certainly more than one issue that affects young people in Brent. At Brent Youth Parliament (BYP), we have five portfolios that we feel are most important to youth in the constituency. These range from Children and Families to Regeneration and Economic Development. Everyone has a role at BYP. Currently, BYP’s main campaign is to “Break the Stereotype of Young People”.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
During my term of office, I hope to improve on Brent’s previous best. I hope to engage more young people into politics, as politics is key to everyday life. As I walk through the playground, young people are talking about the latest political blunder or inauguration – in the case of Barack Obama. As an MYP, I aim to speak on behalf of the young people of Brent and the nation.
What is your future career ambition?
I aim to have a career in national politics, perhaps becoming an MP. I am a strong debater, keen public speaker and always strive for change. However, my main aim in life is to open schools for AIDS and HIV orphans in Southern Africa (South Africa, Mozambique and Malawi).
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
So many public figures have had an impact on me in some way or another. However, the one I most admire has to be Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi listened to and acted on behalf of his people. He always strived for equality between races, religions and social classes, never believing in inferiority. Gandhi influenced the minds of others using words, not weapons. However, he would have not been able to go far without the support of those around him. Just like any other inspiring human being.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
The government should be listening to young people. Young people are the future of Britain, so should be part of the process. After all, what the government decides to do today, affects the population of tomorrow: youth.
Additional comments:
The United Kingdom Youth Parliament provides young people with a stage to voice their opinions, which are very valid. Today’s youth could and should be involved in decision making if they are to be considered seriously by society.
