Name: Nick Pringle
Position: MYP
Constituency: South Tyneside

Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
The amount of voter apathy, lack of participation and overall disconnection with the political system is a major issue. Overall people don’t understand the political system and this must change.
Once people understand the system they can understand how to get involved and make changes within the system – making everybody happier!
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
There are a growing number of youth facilities and activities becoming available to meet the demand for something to do and places to go. This was a massive issue for young people and I believe that it remains so for many. What we need to be doing in the immediate future is ensuring that young people are aware of the activities and opportunities available and ensuring that they are free and accessible for all.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
UKYP is nowhere near as well known as it should be within South Tyneside. Not only within the Council would I like to get the role of MYPs highlighted but also among all young people and, of course, our MPs.
Then we can work together to build a stronger South Tyneside for young people.
What is your future career ambition?
I’d like to work with real people, solving real problems on a day to day basis. There are many jobs in the public and voluntary sector which do this and that’s definitely where I can see myself after university. I’d also like to be a local councillor and possibly, one day, enter Parliament to make changes at the highest level that will reap benefits at a grassroots level.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
Clement Atlee and William Beveridge for their amazing social reforms post World War Two. Had they not been so forward thinking, radical and enthusiastic not only would people in Britain be suffering today but also people across the world as the UK led the way in providing a first class welfare state.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
A decision affecting the nation is a decision affecting young people. Young people have fantastic ideas and provide an extremely valuable source of knowledge for politicians to use. We’re here to be consulted with every step of the way – don’t waste this priceless resource!
