Name: Paul Aitchison
Position: Deputy MYP
Constituency: Wirral
--------------------------------------------------------
Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
Voter apathy is increasing with the last two general elections having the lowest turnout post-World Two. To combat this I believe that compulsory political education must be implemented into both primary and secondary education to educate the future of the country of the political process, how politics affects them and the importance of voting. Therefore we will have a more politically engaged community which I believe benefits the whole process.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
For the Wirral there is a lack of facilities available for young people, however I am very pleased to say that is hopefully soon to change with four new ‘hub’ youth centres planned to be opened. Another major issue is the cost of transport that many young people cannot afford when commuting regularly, specifically to Liverpool.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
I would like to see transport fares reduced for young people as many young people have complained to me regarding the prices. I would also thoroughly like to see compulsory political education introduced into both primary and secondary education for the reasons I listed above.
What is your future career ambition?
I’d love to work with young people, first becoming a history teacher. After that I would then aim to going into politics both serving locally and nationally. I would then be continue my work for young people by being part of youth boards and committees with the ultimate aim of representing young people as a minster in the Children Department.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
There are so many but for her continued persistence and never tiring effort to promote Ghurkhas rights it would have to be Joanna Lumley. Her continued defiance to Government proposals is inspirational to all who campaign for change and I believe that all MYPs can watch and learn from her.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
It would have to be what I am strongly campaigning for, and that is to introduce political education.
