Name: Tom Sharman

Position: Deputy MYP

Constituency:
Bury

Which political issues are you most passionate about?

I feel passionately about education, transport, voting age and citizenship because I feel these issues affect  the majority of young people and I feel it is important to address all young people’s needs.

What do you feel is the biggest issue for young people in your constituency?

Transport - cost, safety and equal rights (discrimination). It is ridiculous how out of hand the cost of travelling, to school alone, has become. It is now an absurd amount. It costs over £300 a year for one child in a family to travel to school on one bus there and back! I thought education for eleven to eighteen year olds was free!

What do you hope to achieve during your term of office?

During my time as a Deputy MYP and Media Representative I would like to improve the content of citizenship education as I feel it is not being taken seriously due to the irrelevance of the content. I would also like to change the stereotypical view that people have of young people today. We are not all hoodies with a grudge against society. Also of course to try and do something about transport issues as I have already pointed out.

What is your future career ambition?

I would like to go into politics but also into some kind of property development.

Which public figure do you most admire and why?

I admire Gordon Brown because I think he has had such a lot to deal with in both his career and his personal life, yet he seems to continue to do his best and not be discouraged by the trials he comes across. For this I applaud him.

If there was one message you could send to the government, what would it be?

Don’t forget about the average person.
