Name: Peter Dennett
Position: MYP
Constituency: West Sussex
--------------------------------------------------------
Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
The political issue that I feel most passionate about is the lack of sexual health education taught in schools today. I feel the knowledge that these young people are deficient in is leading to the noticeable increase in STIs found amongst these young people and also the dramatic increase in teenage pregnancies.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
As well as the lack of sexual health education, I feel the limited amount of activities and things to do in Chichester & West Arun is an issue. I believe this is what causes young people to be out on the streets. I am not saying there is nothing to do, although many leisure activities that are available are either too expensive or are not being promoted or made aware enough to young people.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
In my term of office I am looking to increase the awareness of sexual health education in school and to all young people. I intend to do this by setting up more sexual health clinics during school hours in Chichester & West Arun pacifically open to young people. Also to offer that ‘Personal, Social and Health Education’ is taught at a higher intensity in schools.
What is your future career ambition?
My future career ambition is to be become a doctor which bodes well with my intentions of helping young people.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
Amongst many people, known to the public or not, I most admire Eleanor Simmonds, a two times gold medallist of the Beijing Paralympics. I admire her for what she has achieved at only the age of fourteen being the youngest person to have received an MBE. Showing, against adversity, you can make a difference and achieve your goals.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
Being a young person should not mean that our views are dismissed as we are the people of tomorrow, making our views as important as anyone else’s
Additional comments:
Following the general election of 2005, the average age of an MP was 50.6. On the basis of this fact I believe MYPs are very important for young people, knowing what young people need.
