Name: Alex Ruskin
Position: MYP
Constituency: Bracknell Forest
Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
I am most passionate about the ‘Get on Board’ transport issue because all around our area the fares are expensive for young people and the drivers and older passengers seem to have made the decision that all young people are bad and disruptive.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
I feel that one of the big issues for young people in my constituency is that there are not enough drop-ins for young people whether it be for mental health issues or sexual health.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
During my term of office I hope to kick start my constituencies process towards cheaper transport on busses and the Berkshire wide cheaper transport (with the Berkshire County Youth Council).
What is your future career ambition?
My future career ambition is to become an actress (or a lawyer for when I haven’t got an acting job on the go). I’d like to do these two because I love acting and have wanted to become and actress since the age of 5 and to become a lawyer would mean I can help innocent people have their say and to gain them the justice they deserve.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
My public figure would have to be John Ruskin (1819-1900) because he was a poet, artist, critic, social revolutionary and conservationist and he was a great man who wrote essay after essay on art and architecture that were inspirational throughout the Victorian and Edwardian times. John Ruskin also became the Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford University where he introduced his friend Octavia Hill to Hardwicke Rawnsley. These two later became two founders of the National Trust and the origins of this have been traced back to John Ruskin’s influence. He also took up the cause of conservation with lots of passion and many of the issues he campaigned about are still valid today e.g. town and country planning, greenbelts and smokeless zones. He also campaigned for free schools and libraries and later introduced the ceremony of children dancing around a maypole with ribbons. As you can see John Ruskin has done a lot for us and the list can still go on and that is why he is my public figure.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
To please promote better and positive young people press, as not all young people do wrong, mostly good comes form the younger generation.
