They believe in The Youth of Today, do you?

Name: Abla Seckley

Position: MYP

Constituency:
Buckinghamshire

--------------------------------------------------------

Why did you stand for election?

Because I felt it was a good cause and that it was a good way to get across the views of the youth and make a difference to my area and people in general.

What issue are you most passionate about?

The age gap.  There is a huge grey area between 16 and 21 where it is not clear whether you are classed as a child or an adult.  For example, people are forced to pay adult fares on busses, trains and other commercial facilities at age 16 (and sometimes younger) yet the driving age is 18 and the drinking age is 21.  I feel that there needs to be a single age where all these things are implemented at once, instead of being spaced out for the convenience of a few.

Also, in theory the government should not be able to tax children (under eighteens) on their earnings. Incidentally it is only a loophole that allows them to do so (a very large loophole that no one has fixed).

What do you hope to achieve in your year as an MYP?

I hope to reduce school travel costs for those living out of catchment areas, erect a graffiti wall in Aylesbury, pilot a scheme in which schools make electronic babies available to all pupils (for example each year ten student receives the baby for one week), and make voting available to sixteen year olds.

What would you like to be when you’re older?

I would like to become either a lawyer or a politician.

What public figure do you admire the most and why?

Nelson Mandela.  His unwavering persistence is inspiring, he never gave up even when he was threatened, persecuted and put in prison he always fought for what he beloved in.  He knows how to handle media and tough situations and he his modest in all his work.  (Plus I think he looks a bit like my granddad!)
