Name: Soraya Williams

Position: Deputy MYP

Constituency:
Portsmouth

Which political issues are you most passionate about?

I feel the cost of transport always affects young people, so I am very passionate about that. I also think that more political awareness is needed in some form and that sex education really should be compulsory from a certain age and at this age it should be down to the child not parents if the child chooses to participate or not. It needs to be better then what is available now and about the emotional as well as physical side.

What do you feel is the biggest issue for young people in your constituency?

The cost of transport of all types, whether for travelling to school or allowing them to participate in events and clubs.

What do you hope to achieve during your term of office?

I hope to have set up some kind of 3 in 1 card system for transport in my local area and to have campaigned about issues we discuss and in general raise awareness of youth parliament to young people and politicians.

What is your future career ambition?

I would one day very much like to be a part of the political world but first I plan to take a biomedical degree and a year conversion to law. You never know where the future takes you!

Which public figure do you most admire and why?

I think there are many public figures that have good traits we can learn from but everyone has faults and we must all learn from our own mistakes. By trying things your own way rather then following an idol it brings something new to a job.

If there was one message you could send to the government, what would it be?

To never forget the reasons politicians through history became involved and that their role is to represent people and do what is best for the majority in a democratic way. It should be less party bickering and more about the issues.

Additional comments:

Anyone can get involved in Youth Parliament, even just for the one issue they are passionate about. It brings so many different people together and we can all learn from each other as we aim for the same goal!
