Name: Tom Follett

Position: MYP

Constituency:
North Somerset

--------------------------------------------------------

Which political issues are you most passionate about?

Equality, Freedom and Social Justice. I think expecting people to pay tuition fees for their education is despicable, and I'm a big supporter of the welfare state. I'm concerned about the creeping privatisation of the NHS, BBC and schools. Why should private companies make money from our great public institutions?

What do you feel is the biggest issue for young people in your constituency?

As in most other places, public transport prices. The situation isn't helped by a certain transport conglomerate holding a virtual monopoly. If the council ran the bus system as it did before deregulation, it would exist to provide a service rather than to make a profit.

What do you hope to achieve during your term of office?

Either achieve or put North Somerset well on the way to a concessionary scheme on buses for young people as South Gloucester are considering. Get the council to accept that the MYPs voice is just as valid as a Councillors, if not more so. Get a freeze on any new dispersal orders as they are a breach of human rights.

What is your future career ambition?

Become an MP, and perhaps to work in the EU. I feel the EU is a great achievement and people don't appreciate it enough.

Which public figure do you most admire and why?

Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela. He took over from a corrupt government and gave everyone the vote, and greatly improved the life of the lower and middle classes using socialist policies, and shared his countries oil wealth amongst all citizens rather than greedy foreign corporations.

If there was one message you could send to the government, what would it be?

Stop eroding civil liberties, whether for young people or ethnic minorities. For the sake of 'Security' against so-called 'Anti-Social Behaviour' and 'Extremism' we don't need to destroy all the principles of freedom our county stands for.

Additional comments:

If the UK Youth Parliament can gain a good foothold in local government, then we can spread the liberal values that many young people hold and bring a stronger society to everyone.
