Name: Rosie Corrigan

Position: MYP

Constituency:
North Yorkshire

Which political issues are you most passionate about?

Politics influences every aspect of our lives, and there is at least one political “issue” within each of these aspects. I am passionate in my role as an MYP about ensuring that young people are affected fairly by these issues; focusing especially upon fair and adequate financial assistance for those in education (be it school, college or university), thus ensuring that education is available to all and not only those that can afford it; improving transport for young people, improving healthcare for disadvantaged young people and generally improving the lives of young people however possible.

What do you feel is the biggest issue for young people in your constituency?

As North Yorkshire is a very large, very rural county, transport is a great problem in the lives of young people. It is exceedingly important that we do not have young people in rural areas unable to afford the costs of public transport, therefore feeling particularly isolated; especially if they struggle or cannot afford to attend a place of education. This is something that myself and the other North Yorkshire UKYP representatives are endeavoring to influence this year.

What do you hope to achieve during your term of office?

I intend to work to address the problems that young people face, both in North Yorkshire, in the Yorkshire and Humber region, and nationally. I shall do this by working towards fulfilling my manifesto promises (which can be found on my MYP facebook group), as well as consulting and listening further to other young people; to address any problems that they may face. I plan to improve transport, educational financial help and healthcare for young people, as well as providing more facilities and places for young people to go.

What is your future career ambition?

I am passionate about representing and helping people, in order to improve their quality of life. Therefore, I would like to become a solicitor (possibly specialising in human rights) in order to make a positive difference. Following this, I would love to become an MP, and have the opportunity to represent people to the best of my ability, hopefully with the result of improving others’ lives.

Which public figure do you most admire and why?

I admire figures such as William Wilberforce, a British politician and philanthropist who stood up in a time at which black people were considered inferior to white people, and led the movement to the abolition of the abhorrent slave trade. And Lillian Gutteridge, a nurse who despite being stabbed in the thigh by an SS Officer during the Second World War evacuation from Dunkirk managed to drive her ambulance of wounded soldiers to a railway siding, where she persuaded the French driver to take on board her patients, eventually taking on 600 wounded French and British troops; all of whom arrived several days later in Britain safely.

If there was one message you could send to the government, what would it be?

I would ask them to remember that young people are the future. We are not responsible for the recession, for global warming, for poverty, for any problems that we are destined to inherit. So instead of continuing to increase these problems, listen to us. Listen to our thoughts, ideas and concerns, as we have the creativity to work towards undoing the problems that you’ve created.

Additional comments:

Together, young people can make a difference! =D
