Basildon recycling to get a shake up

8th October 2008

Basildon councillors are to look at ways they can radically improve the amount of waste local people send for recycling.

The council will face huge financial penalties if it fails to recycle 60 per cent of its rubbish by 2020 – the current rate is just over 30 per cent. Officials are now putting forward six options, based on altering the frequency of collections, and the type of rubbish collections.

Terri Sargent, councillor responsible for the environment, said: “We are considering a number of options for increasing recycling and reducing our dependency on landfill.

“As a district we are already recycling 32 per cent of our rubbish, but there is increasing pressure on us to do more. The rising cost of landfill charges will hit taxpayers hard unless we reduce the amount of waste being dumped in the ground. We will be considering each of them in depth and speaking to local residents to find out their views.”
