School cartons campaign launched

9th October 2008

More than 235 million juice and milk cartons are used every year in England’s schools- a huge waste currently clogging up landfills. A new initiative has been launched to provide recycling of these paper-based cartons. The intiative, known as the Business & Schools Carton Recycling Service, is by Tetra Pak in co-operation with the carton industry under the sponsorship of Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE UK).

This will be a significant expansion of recycling in the UK, recently, the number of carton collection facilities has increased to cover 85 per cent of the country, but collections have focused on household carton recycling whilst schools are a huge producer of carton waste.

Tetra Pak has expanded on existing infrastructure in launching the new service, now enabling schools and businesses in about half of the UK to contact local carton recyclers through a dedicated web portal. The schools and businesses are then able to get a quote and arrange for a collection schedule.

The recycling operations manager at Tetra Pak, Fay Dashper, said: “We look forward to seeing more schools and businesses getting involved, and urge every company and school to visit the website, see if their area is covered and start recycling cartons”
