Schools who enter the challenge receive a free educational pack that will teach children about the environment, and there are cash prizes up for grabs. Schools that recycle the most old directories per pupil will share a total of £600, plus there is a £100 bonus prize for the best newcomer.
Cllr Heather Goddard, South Gloucestershire Council's executive member for communities, said: "The Yellow Woods Challenge is an excellent way for youngsters to learn about conservation and recycling, contribute to the local environment by recycling old directories and win prizes for their schools."
The South Gloucestershire Yellow Woods Challenge runs until October 24.
The event is run by Yellow Pages, working in partnership with the Woodland Trust, South Gloucestershire Council and SITA.
