Young people account for half of all diagnosed STI's

16.07.2008

The Health Protection Agency today announced figures stating that half of all newly diagnosed sexually transmitted infections in the UK are in young people.

The agency's latest report found that young people accounted for 65 per cent of all cases of chlamydia, 55 per cent of all cases of genital warts and 50 per cent of all cases of gonorrhoea. Startling figures considering that just one in eight of the population are 16-24.

The publication, which you can read here, stressed the need for young people to be made more aware of the issue of STIs, including safe sex and the importance of getting tested.
