North West trial a fresh look at SRE

23.11.07

As a direct result of issues about sex and relationship education raised at last years Circles of Influence event, the Government office North West has brought in a new member of staff, Jackie Routledge, to develop the quality of SRE across the region. The aim is to create and trial a new SRE curriculum that, if successful, may be fully implemented and made compulsory for schools across the country.

Jackie is very keen to have young people involved in developing a curriculum for SRE across the North West.

As part of takeover day Darren Norris, MYP for Lancashire, worked with Government office North West to look at how young people should be involved with developing a new curriculum for SRE across the North West.

"I was looking at how young people could be involved in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of this trial curriculum. If SRE is to become a mandatory course in schools i think it would be very important for young people. They will ultimately be affected by it. They need to be involved in the creation of the course; outlining what should be taught, what will be useful, and how it is to be taught".
