Voting Frenzy | |
Election fever has hit the country once again! UKYP elections have taken place from the Scilly Isles to Cumbria – all in the name of youth representation. There have already been some massive turnouts - 7,167 in Sutton, 16,693 in East Sussex and 20,000 in Devon. The West Midlands took the election process one step further by becoming the first region to announce results across the region on the same day (thanks to the dedication of Regional Co-ordinator Anna Sterckx and local authority workers). Around 50,000 young people went to the polls to vote for the West Midlands MYPs and the day was a huge success, achieving record press coverage! Well done to all those involved! Liam Byrne MP, Minister for the West Midlands commented, “The UK Youth Parliament is one of the best ways in the world to make your voice heard. Today we need the ideas and the energy and the insight of young people more than ever before. The UK Youth Parliament is your way to get your message through.” To view details of the newly elected MYPs go to: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Young people vote “yes” to UKYP In four areas in the North East where the local authorities are not engaged with UKYP, the young people are taking matters into their own hands. With the support of their schools, teachers and North East Regional Co-ordinator Doug Hallam, they are holding UKYP elections. Using the UKYP election guidelines and teacher resources, they are engaging in real democracy and leading the way for others. In Northumberland, students of King Edward IV School in Morpeth, home of Northumberland County Council, have been targeting young people of the county since November, with eight candidates going for the two MYP positions. South Tyneside, Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland are close behind with elections planned for early March. Doug Hallam, UKYP North East Regional Co-ordinator, said: “This is real youth democracy at its best! The young people are learning and understanding about elections and how they work but also about representing their peers on issues that matter to them”. All the students will gain an accredited Youth Achievement Award through UKYP recognising all their efforts. |
